Wedding Diaries
Real brides. Real budgets. Real talk.
We spent £29,455 on our intimate London wedding and planned it in 4 months
For our first Wedding Diary, G takes us inside an autumn London wedding, from a simple soo dhoonis at home to a 200 guest nikkah and a 200 guest evening wedding. She shares what the day cost, where she shopped, what surprised her and the decisions she would make all over again.

The Vision
My vision was autumnal, soft and romantic.
I obviously wanted everything to look beautiful, but I also wanted the wedding to be a genuinely fun experience for our guests. That played a big part in the vendors we chose. I wanted the people we worked with to reflect the atmosphere we were trying to create.
We started with a simple soo dhoonis at home on 14 September. Then, on 1 November, we had our nikkah at Diamond Hotel in the afternoon and our wedding at Hilton Double Tree that evening.
We had around 200 guests at each.
Having both a nikkah and an evening wedding party was always the plan. Having them on the same day was more of a practical decision than something I had specifically wanted. The venues were only around 10 minutes apart, so it actually worked really well and made the transition between the two much smoother.
Balancing culture, religion and what we actually wanted
Balancing the cultural and religious sides of the wedding was probably one of the trickier parts of planning.
It required lots of conversations with family, but also lots of conversations between the two of us. We had to decide what we absolutely wanted, what we absolutely did not want, and then work from there.
I mostly left the cultural side of things to my mum.

THE FEELING
"Autumnal, soft and romantic."
AFTER THE WEDDING
We did not go straight on honeymoon.
For the first two weeks after the wedding, we stayed at home, recovered from everything and settled into our new home together.
Six weeks later, we went to Morocco for a minimoon.
Let's Talk Numbers
Our final spend was £29,455.
We paid for the wedding using our savings, with help from family.
The Shopping Trips
Dubai
The Dubai shopping trip was very intense.
You absolutely need a game plan and a checklist. You also kind of need to know the places you want to go before you arrive because otherwise you can waste so much time figuring things out once you are there.
If you are having anything tailored, I would give yourself around nine or ten days in total. You need enough time to shop, have fittings, make alterations and actually collect everything without spending the whole trip stressed.
For me, it was absolutely worth it.
I managed to get accessories, gold, my diraac, diraacs for my mum and my bridesmaids, who were my sisters, as well as wedding favours.
My top tip: Al Manal Centre near Souk Naif was really good for bridal diraac. Have a list before you go, know what you need and leave enough time for tailoring.
Turkey
Turkey was much more random.
I had already booked a girls trip with my best friend and sister when a friend suggested that I go to Fatih and look at wedding dresses while I was there.
So I did.
The body of my wedding dress was custom made in two days. I then flew back out around two weeks before the wedding to get the final dress.
It sounds slightly mad looking back at it, but it was absolutely worth it.
My dress had a lot of lace detail and I genuinely think having a custom dress made to that level would have cost me considerably more in the UK.
Between both Turkey trips, flights and hotels for me and hooyo were £800.
Would I do it again? Absolutely. The value made the extra travel worthwhile for me.
Where the Money Went
THE NON NEGOTIABLES
My two absolute non negotiables were decor and having a wedding coordinator.
I had quite a clear idea of how I wanted the wedding to look, so decor was not somewhere I really wanted to compromise.
But the coordinator was just as important.
I did not want to spend my actual wedding day answering questions, checking timings, dealing with suppliers or worrying about whether everything was where it was supposed to be.
I wanted to be the bride.
Looking back, that was absolutely the right decision.
Where we saved
One place we saved was on the nikkah decor.
Diamond Hotel already came with decor, so we decided not to spend more money replacing everything just for the sake of having our own setup.
And I would make the same decision again. It turned out nice.

The Plot Twists
THE MONEY SPIRAL
When another £250 starts feeling like nothing
What genuinely surprised me the most was getting to the point where an extra £250 started feeling like short change 😭😭😭.
THE HIDDEN COST
The female only premium
One thing that surprised me cost wise was how much extra it could cost to make sure all of the staff working at the wedding were female.
WHAT MATTERED
The quiet moments
The thing that mattered most to me on the wedding day was not something we had paid for.
"At some point, an extra £250 genuinely started to feel like short change."
If You Could Do It Again
Do not wait for the soo dhoonis
If you are planning to travel to buy things or have anything custom made, I would absolutely recommend not waiting until after the soo dhoonis to start.
Have the financial conversation with your partner early. Work out what you are both comfortable spending and what the budget actually looks like. That way, if you want to travel, order custom pieces or have things tailored, you have time to make proper decisions.
Have a proper plan if you are travelling
Dubai was worth it for me, but I would never recommend just turning up and hoping for the best. Have your checklist. Research where you want to go. Know what you need. If tailoring is involved, give yourself enough days.
Protect more time for photos
I really wish I had taken more photos with people before the wedding actually started. I managed to have a proper shoot with my immediate family beforehand, but that was pretty much it.
I also wish I had taken more solo photographs in my wedding dress on the stage. You spend so much time choosing your dress and your decor, then the wedding day comes and you somehow forget to stop and take all of the photographs you imagined having.
What I would change and what I nailed
I would have chosen a more experienced security team.
What I absolutely nailed was the vendors. Every single one of them was amazing. One of the biggest bonuses was also being able to work with only Muslim women. There was a level of comfort and understanding that came with that which made the whole experience much easier for me.
THE LITTLE DETAILS
Our ring plate, nikkah certificate and other personalised wedding pieces were sourced through Etsy.
Kalam Studios provided the stencils for the wedding.
The stationery used for the wedding favours was bought in Turkey.
They were much smaller parts of the overall spend, but those details helped everything feel personal to us.
Vendor Shoutout
THE ONE I WOULD BOOK AGAIN
SD Weddings
My biggest shoutout has to go to SD Weddings.
Samsam and her team gave me the freedom to just be a bride on my wedding day.
And I do not think you fully understand how valuable that is until you are actually there.
For months, you have been making decisions. You have been answering questions. You have been thinking about timings, vendors, family, money, outfits, guests and every tiny detail.
Then the wedding day finally comes. I did not want to manage any of it anymore.
And I did not have to.
Samsam and her team dealt with the details so that I could actually enjoy the wedding I had spent four months planning.
"I would book them again in a heartbeat."
